Being a young active 26 year old women living with Lupus was a challenge all by itself. However, as hip pain from arthritis began to complicate my life, I faced the possibility of assuming the role of an invalid.
Despite the kindness and compassion of my family and friends, my arthritis began to take a toll on my work and doing the things that I love. I was no longer able to walk neither stand for long hours; I would limp. I could not dress myself from the waist down. It was a struggle to get through the day. I felt like I was 100 years old. I couldn’t do anything, not even sleep.
My whole life was affected. I couldn’t do the basics, such as tie my own shoes, drive long distances or go grocery-shopping. My arthritis also interfered with my social life. Even though the pain worsened I delayed seeing a surgeon. I had a fear of having major surgery, complications, walking high and low, but must of all I felt I was too young for the surgery, and I could put it off.
My turning point was one night I could not sleep from the pain in my hip, and when I got up to go to the bathroom I could not stand because my leg was basically turning backwards. That is when I contacted Dr. Michael M. Koonin. An exam and x-rays showed my hip was badly deteriorated. My left hip had deteriorated to the point where the bones of the hip joint were rubbing together grinding with every move I made. Dr. Koonin then diagnosed me with Avascular Necrosis. It was more than physical pain. The disease takes an emotional, social and psychological toll as well.
Since medicines were not much help, Dr. Koonin said I was a good candidate and suggested replacing my diseased hip with a hip replacement implant. We discussed the advancement in hip surgery technology and what was best for me. Dr. Koonin chose the latest technology in hip replacement ceramic-on-ceramic.
I had a successful total left hip replacement in October 2006. I have so much more energy now, I can bend and pick things up, tie my shoes, dress myself from the waist down, walk, stand and even drive for long distances, I can do things I haven’t done in years.
Being a hip replacement patient has enhanced my quality of life and it has completely changed. I am pain free, my legs are the same length and my waddle is gone. More than anything I am grateful to be able to return to the normal activities of my life without pain. After years of limping, I am so appreciative that there is this surgery and I was able to have it.Undergraduate::
